Introduction: The purpose of this interview is to get a general idea of how athletes perceive gender segregation in sports and their experiences in competing at a structured level. Whether or not they believe that gender mixing is a good idea as well as any experiences they may have on the matter. With their knowledge of the differences in the male and female versions of each sport is there a right way to approach the issue regarding transgender athletes. If the athletes have any opinions on what a gender mixed league would need to be fair.

1) What sport do you play?

Paraphrased: I play Volleyball and flag football.

2) How long have you been playing?

Paraphrased: Since I was in highschool I was the captain of the volleyball team there and now I just play.

3) Are there any types of restrictions that your league enforces?

Paraphrased: The nets for the women’s team had to be lower than the men’s team other than I don’t know

4) Are you aware of any restrictions for the opposite sex and if so do they differ?

Paraphrased: Other than the net there I’m not sure.

5) Have you ever competed against the opposite sex?

Paraphrased: Not in an official setting but during the practice we would have games together and we would always put some guys on either team.

6) Would you be willing to do so?

Paraphrased: No the guys would hit harder, stronger, and they were taller I wouldn’t want to play against a team of all guys.

7) What do you think of men and women competing together?

Paraphrased: I think they should be allowed to do so if they want to, its their choice

8) Can you think of any positives or negatives that might come from joint competition?

Paraphrase: I’m pretty sure their are going to be girls that get hurt, especially in sports like football where those guys are huge. But sports is about finding the best athlete and that is how you would find them.

9) Are you aware of the situation regarding transgender athletes?

Paraphrased: No I haven’t

10) Would you feel comfortable competing against a transgender athlete?

Paraphrased: No because I’ve seen what guys can do and even though they may not be completely a guy now, they still were for a long time so they still have the advantages they had before.

11) Do you feel they would have any unfair advantages?

Paraphrased: Yeah because they would be taller and stronger than the other girls and it just wouldn’t be fair.
