The underlying message of the video is that people are giving up personal relationships in order to appear more important online. At the very beginning of the video it talks about all of the fake smiles that Paul is getting online. It starts off on the idea that everything that Paul is doing doesn’t have any real results. All of it is a show that he puts on to appear important while everywhere he goes he is either alone or pushed away. Yet all of his pictures appear as if he is apart of something important.

All of the scenes in which he takes pictures are heavily structured in a way that shows no one wants anything to do with him. When he finally does meet someone and proceeds to interact with her he once again ruins it with how he acts. After treating her like another publicity stunt, she like everyone else so far, tosses him away. Even as she tries to chase back after him and give him one last chance at an actual relationship with someone, he throws it away. His over attention to social media has turned him and so many other people into human turds.
